Here’s a Quick way to Backup your Computer Online

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Backing up files is something we all know we should do, but it’s one of those things that is so easy to procrastinate on. That is until the worst happens and you lose everything.

From my experience besides yesterday the next best time to start backing up your data online is right now.

Let’s Get Started

Backing up your computer online is the least painful way of ensuring your important files are saved some where else besides your hard drive. There’s no need for blank DVD’s, CD’s, external hard drives, USB drives etc. Everything is uploaded to a secure location and for a small fee is kept safe until you could need it.

The first step is visit Mozy, their an online home backup service that offers a simple free trial you can use to get started. After signing up you’ll need to download the small application used to select your files for backup and upload them to the secure backup server location online.

Which Files and Folders Should I Backup?

Most backup programs online, including Mozy Home Backup, select your My Documents folder as the default backup files and folders. Most documents will be in your My Documents folder, you should also add in any system settings files, and your email folders and address book.

If you’ve ever bought any software and had to download it and haven’t made a copy also add in those files.

Are we all done?

Once files are selected for backup all that’s left is to start the initial backup process in the Mozy application and you’re done. That’s it! The first backup will take some time since you are uploading a lot of data over your Internet connection.

Of course the good news is that once the initial backup is complete that’s it. Those files won’t need to be uploaded again unless their updated or modified in some way. The only items that will be uploaded will be as new files are added to the directories you’ve chosen to backup, and also if old files are changed in some way.

The overloading backup

If you have lost computer data previously due to perhaps computer crash, then you must have tried finding a backup system online. Probably, you have come across systems that depend on tapes or external hard drives which, to keep it safe from theft or natural calamities, you must store somewhere else and assure yourself everything in it will be recoverable.Only when someone actually handles the hardware can the system assure complete safety and recoverability.

Backup System Break Up Blues

Enter the automated online backup, essentially the ideal solution for those who want to back their data up and not have to ever worry about it again unless one of the aforementioned problems happens and they need access to older files. These are exemplified by Carbonite and Mozy, which stores data at professionally managed remote servers as backup.

Getting Cozy With Mozy

As the best system today, Mozy sets schedules of backing up your files at your convenience, and limits Internet usage so you can work the Internet without interruption. This ensures that backing up data doesn’t cause your other activities to be put on pause.

On that sense, Mozy can also back up the information in use so there is no need to exit the program just to store the back up data.Exiting the program just to back up the files is time consuming, and anyone who used other programs can say so. See this more detailed Mozy review to learn more about Mozy’s: performance, features, costs and what it can do for you.

Once you have tried backing up your files and set the next back up schedules, Mozy will handle them automatically for you. Mozy’s second best feature is its capability to keep several versions of back up files to replace infected or corrupted primary ones.

Reasons to use an Online Data Backup Service

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Hackers, viruses, acts of nature — even a coffee cup is capable of destroying years of your precious data.Today often a lot of our dearest memories and possessions are stored in a digital format on a hard drive or memory storage device, you’d think that the majority of us would do anything to keep this data safe.

Not that I wish this on anyone but just for a minute think if your home caught fire and you lost your wedding and family photos, you could never get them back. How about if a thief broke into your house and stole your tax information for the last ten years from a file cabinet in your den?

The scary thing is that unless you are one of the people who have setup a back system on their home PC you could be leaving yourself open to this happening any day.

What exactly is Online Data Back?

An online data backup service is a private, secure storage solution for your most sensitive data. These programs and services connect with your desktop and provide a secure interface for you to transfer files and folders to a secure location online that is protected and watched over by PC security every day all day.Storing files this way is the online equivalent of a safe deposit box for your important documents, jewelery and other items.

Some of the most popular online data backup services are Carbonite and Mozy. The standard Carbonite or Mozy review will tell you that these services are well worth the price: they protect you and your family from the prying eyes of the internet and the unpredictability of home electronics.

Why should I use an online data backup service?

Because you value your privacy. You like to be able to know you can rest easy that professionals are watching over your important files and data.So you won’t be taking any chances that your personal information on your computer could be compromised.

Recovering data after a crash is very expensive, and usually isn’t successful.Of course the question has to be why would you wait until something is gone to try and restore it.Being a responsible PC owner and user requires you to be proactive about avoiding data loss and ensuring that important data is backed up for a rainy day via a proper online backup service.
